Senior Health, Safety, Environmental Advisor

Senior Health, Safety, Environmental Advisor – Groundworks/Civil Engineering

We are a large civil engineering business with hundreds of workers on our project sites at any one time. We hold several certifications including ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO45001, ISO5001, NHSS 30 Highways, Achilles Building Confidence, and various SSIP schemes.

We are recruiting a Senior HSE Advisor to join our team based in the West Midlands. This is predominantly a field-based role. The role provides an excellent opportunity to influence and shape the governance and culture of the business, reporting to a Director.

To be considered for the role you must have at least 5 years post-qualified experience in senior construction health & safety role, working in the project team of high-profile contracts (e.g. HS2). This would typically involve preparing/reviewing RAMS, meetings with Client/PC, hands on interaction with supervisors and delivery teams for the implementation of safe working practices.

You will have a demonstrable track record in reducing risk and implementing control measures at both an organisational and project level (e.g. from fatigue, to HAVS, to digging around underground services).  It is expected you would have the appropriate experience and knowledge of industry / best practice themes (e.g. fatigue) to support the McDermotts Continual Improvement journey.  This would involve as appropriate, making a business case/justification for changes, improvements, and investment.

This is a dynamic and predominantly field based role and you would be expected to be appropriately flexible to travel, work from various locations, and form part of a temporary project team for the delivery of some high-profile contracts. You will embrace change, adapting as appropriate to changing requirements, work schedules, and priorities.

Depending upon contract requirements, the Senior HSE Advisor will act as both a visiting advisor and hands on member of a project team.  Whilst there is a place for some traditional inspections, it is expected your skills and experience will add value to the business by:

  • ensuring standards are clearly defined and understood,
  • appropriately advising and supporting the McDermotts project teams,
  • dynamically problem solving – cutting through the immediate unsafe act/condition observed,
  • delivery impromptu briefings to workers,
  • de-escalating conflicts – refocussing energies on solutions,
  • getting interested parties to sit down and talk through challenges arising – facilitating meeting with clients, supply chain, and other interested parties as appropriate,
  • joining up requirements with other functions (e.g. Training, HR, Plant)
  • engaging the workforce and supply chain,
  • implementing measures to prevent recurrence through root cause analysis and robust problem solving.
