Congratulations to our newest graduate apprentices

This week we celebrated the graduation of McDermotts apprentices Lewis and Tyler, which marked the completion of their Level 2 Groundworks apprenticeship. This involved 18 months’ commitment to splitting their time between working on site and learning from experienced groundworks operatives, and undertaking off-the-job training.

Now they’ve completed their apprenticeship, Lewis and Tyler are confidently moving on to the next stage of their career.

Said Lewis, “I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I left school. My step-dad works for McDermotts and suggested I look at their apprenticeship scheme.

“The first thing I did was a three-week site ready course with Salutem which gave me some basic practical skills and the confidence to go on to apply for the apprenticeship.”

Tyler added “It was great to get real work experience at the same time as working towards my qualification, learning skills I didn’t expect to learn, and getting paid at the same time. I’d definitely recommend an apprenticeship.”

We work in partnership with Salutem Limited which specialises in training and apprenticeships for the construction industry.

We chose to partner with Salutem due to the high standard of training they offer. Salutem encourages apprentices to train at their own pace, through individualised learning plans. Salutem also follow a process of continual improvement, always seeking to develop the way they manage and deliver their training courses.

“Our industry-focused delivery model is designed by employers, for employers. Taking an apprentice will allow you to develop your worker’s skills according to your standards. It is an investment in growing both your business and the construction industry.” said Gemma Kemp, Operations Director at Salutem.

Apprenticeships offer the chance to learn skills while gaining practical experience in a work environment. As well as training at Salutem’s purpose-built academy and joining one of their teams on site, apprentices have the option to undertake industry recognised qualifications.

Malcolm McDermott, Managing Director, said: “We are incredibly proud of Lewis and Tyler’s achievement. For all the hard work and dedication they both put into completing their apprenticeships, McDermotts gets the satisfaction of that as well. They’ve done the hard bit, now the sky’s their limit.”
