Every year we choose some good causes to support and throughout 2020, it was Papyrus and Tommy’s.
Papyrus is dedicated to the prevention of young suicide. Suicide is the biggest killer of young people – male and female – under 35 in the UK. Every year many thousands more attempt or contemplate suicide, harm themselves or suffer alone, afraid to speak openly about how they are feeling. Tommy’s funds research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth, and provides information for parents-to-be to help them have a healthy pregnancy and baby. To find out more about Tommy’s and what they do, visit their website.
Although the coronavirus outbreak meant that some of our fundraising activities had to be cancelled, we still managed to raise an incredible £20,000. We have also decided to continue fundraising for these two charities for another year.
Polly from Tommy’s said: “A huge thank you to the team at McDermotts from all of us here at Tommy’s. What a fantastic achievement during such a challenging year. £10,000 could fund our midwives for three months, supporting approximately 1,500 women! Together, we will continue to prevent heartbreak and save babies’ lives.”
Vicki from Papyrus said: “We are so grateful for the £10,000 raised by McDermotts and we are thrilled to be working with them again this year. Our aim is that every McDermotts’ employee knows how and where to signpost a colleague, customer, client, friend or family member who is experiencing suicidal thoughts and for PAPYRUS information and resources to be freely available to them. 2020 was a difficult year for all of us, this has shown through the increased demand for our services, the money raised will enable to us increase our HOPELINEUK service even further so we can be there for more young people in their time of need”.
