As everyone knows, supporting the local community is at the heart of McDermotts. For the last 3 years, every Wednesday afternoon a member of staff from Head Office spends an hour with members of the POD – the local community centre for Nechells. Team members join the weekly ‘Coffee and Chat’ sessions where local residents can get together and socialise while enjoying hot drinks and biscuits.
We shall be regularly sharing stories from the POD as residents impart their knowledge and wisdom to the McDermotts team.
This week, local resident Danny (pictured at the top of the table) reveals the real origin of Ali G’s trademark clicking hand gesture…
“Being only five foot two and having family who already worked in the horse racing industry, I had my heart set on becoming a jockey. So as soon as I finished school I moved to a racing yard and began my training. One of the first things I learnt was the hand flicking movement. When you wanted the horse to go faster, you would lean forward and hand flick close to the horse’s ears. It would sound like a whip cracking, and spur the horse on and so save you actually using the whip on them.”
